After the devastating attack at the World Trade Center, local residents Corinda Carford, Jim Wassle, Dan Murphy, and Ed McKenna, gathered together to find a way to cope with this tragedy and formed The Alliance of Neighbors of Monmouth County—-a foundation for the families of the victims from the local area—-home to many New York City commuters. Through the efforts of the Alliance a fund raising weekend event was created that would benefit neighbors and friends who suffered tragic losses. As co-producer of the “Weekend of Remembrance”, and one of the founders of The Alliance of Neighbors, singer-songwriter Corinda Carford was called upon to utilize her many talents and experience. Her role ranged from designing brochures and press releases, to overseeing the catering; from organizing security to singing back up for some of the artists, including the quintessential “Jersey Boy”,” Bruce Springsteen. Other “locals” involved in the concert were filmmaker, Kevin Smith who served as MC; The Smithereens, Phoebe Snow, Joan Jett, and Jon Bon Jovi. The concerts raised almost a million dollars and funds are already being distributed to the families. Ironically, in an interview Corinda gave to amazon.com last year, she described her objective: “I try to go deep under the skin—especially mine—and find that nerve. I’m on a mission. I want to touch people in some way…. make a difference…make a connection. I think it’s important for everyone to know that they are not alone—no matter who we are each of us is vulnerable. That’s what makes us human. And it’s that human contact that makes life beautiful and worthwhile.” Under horrendous circumstances, Corinda has achieved that. The view from her home has been radically changed since September 11, and a day doesn’t go by without a sigh of melancholy. With help from her friends and neighbors they stood united, and performed a Herculean feat.
